Wildlife photography combines a range of skills, both creative and technical. Many people struggle with one aspect in particular; knowing the best light for capturing their wildlife photo.

To take a top-class wildlife photograph, you need to know your animal; where to find it, how to approach it without scaring it away, and how to know the precise moment to press the button to capture the character of the subject. Often a wildlife photographer will spend hours trying to get a good shot. What a shame, then, if all that effort is wasted by taking your photo in bad light.

As a nature photographer, I have learned that the ideal light for a photo can vary depending on the subject. Landscape photos are usually best photographed in sunny weather, early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the contrast is low and the light is soft and colouful. On the hand, rainforest photography is usually best in the middle of the day, in cloudy weather to eliminate extremes of light and shade. To understand the best lighting for wildlife photography, you can take a lesson from both landscape and rainforest photography.

To get the best light for a wildlife photo, you are really looking to minimize contrast, and to eliminate shadows from important areas; most importantly across the face of the animal.

If you take your photos in the middle of a sunny day, you are bound to encounter shadows in all the wrong places. Bright light is likely to overexpose parts of the subject, while the face and the underside of the animal could be lost in heavy shadow. The result will be unattractive, and lacking in much of the detail that should give character to your photo.

There is nothing wrong with taking your wildlife photos on a sunny day. Just remember the lesson from landscape photography and seek to take your photos early in the morning and late in the afternoon. At these times the subject is illuminated from a more horizontal angle, so the full face of the animal is well-lit; you are less likely to have shadows over the eyes and other important features. If there are shadows, they will be much softer because the contrast is much lower when the sun is low in the sky.

The light at these times is also much more colourful, with the golden hues you associate with sunrise and sunset. This is a classic technique for improving landscapes, but it can be just as effective for wildlife. The warmth of the light can create an intimacy in your pictures that is completely lost in the harsh light of midday.

The second approach is to follow the rule of rainforest photography, and take your photos in overcast weather. This allows you to catch your subject in very even, low-contrast light.

I find cloudy days particularly useful for animals with glossy surfaces. Frogs, for example, have damp, shiny skin that reflects a lot of light. In glary conditions a green frog may appear mostly grey or silver in a photo. On a cloudy day the same frog will be shown in its true colours.

Birds can often appear more colourful on a cloudy day, for the very same reason. The sun shining on glossy feathers can create a lot of reflection, robbing the photo of its natural colour. It may seem the opposite of what you would expect, but the dull light of a cloudy day can actually produce the truest colours in a bright wildlife subject.

One final question you may ask: should you use a flash to illuminate a wildlife photo? My answer to that is a definite “NO.” Flash photography bathes the subject in white light, coming from directly in front of the subject. It may illuminate the subject, but at the same time rob it of the natural play of light and shade that makes a good photo so appealing.

Some wildlife photography experts use multiple flashes to brightly illuminate a subject from every possible angle. This approach can work very well, but remember; these are experts in flash photography. If you are at the beginner stage, I recommend learning to work with natural light. When you get the hang of it, I guarantee you will be happy with the results.

A photography studio is the basis for any photographer to do the majority of their work. If the work area is a compatible working environment, then the photographer can become an artist.

Here a bride can become a princess, a senior in high school can be forever young, and a baby can always be little. With the right photography equipment, the studio can be a canvas for the artist to create on.

One thing to consider when setting up a photography studio is whether the studio will be floor-based or ceiling-based. So what exactly is floor or ceiling based? This refers to the type of lighting used. Lighting is so important in photography.

The exposure compensation of film is critical when talking of lighting. Floor-based lighting is when the lights are basically on stands and the various backgrounds are on supports. This can prove tricky to work around sometimes.

The chance of knocking a lighting fixture over can increase with floor-based lighting. A ceiling-based lightning photography studio is when the lights are on a rail system and the background is on rollers.

This kind of photography studio is a little easier to work in compared to a floor-based photography studio. As far as price is concerned, a floor-based is less expensive than a ceiling-based. A new photographer may start out with a floor-based and work up to a ceiling-based.

After deciding if the studio will be floor or ceiling lights than the backgrounds become an issue to deal with. So many photographers use everything from lattice to screens as backgrounds. For various art photography, different textures and light shades can help.

Usually, however, the photographer will use a basic seamless paper. This works great in the photography studio, but for location work, the paper is too bulky to carry. One type of photography equipment is Photek’s Background-in-a-Bag.

With this, you can duct tape these backgrounds against a wall, and they are made for traveling because they can be folded up and put in a gym bag. Another background to think of is muslin fabric. This again can be used to travel with or in the studio.

Many options are out in the market for setting up a photography studio. Whether portrait photography or a form of art photography is what is being focused on while in the studio, lighting and backgrounds are crucial to making the studio experience unique for the client.

When a photographer spends a little extra time getting their studio set up, than a client can enjoy their experience and recommend that photographer, and that is just more money in the bank.

Photo mosaics are rising in popularity all over the world. You have probably seen one somewhere such as in your child’s school, your local library, a medical office or elsewhere. They are beautiful, large photo mosaics that will catch everyone and anyone’s eye. You just can’t take your eyes off of these wonderful photos. There is so much to look at and so much to discover in a photo mosaic.

So, What is a Photo Mosaic?

A photo mosaic can also be known as a Photomosaic. This is a type of imaging art that is completely unique from the rest. A photo mosaic is usually made from a digital photograph ‘ this would be the best type of image to use. You could also use another type of picture, but for the sake of this article, we will focus on creating photo mosaics from a digital photograph.

To begin, the photograph needs to be divided into equal rectangular sections, as small as you want them to be. They should be small enough to create a great visual effect, but not too small so that someone looking at the finished project could not see them. They also should not be too large, because then it would look a little odd and probably not create your desired look.

Every one of those rectangular divisions will be replaced by another image with normal colors. When you look at the image at a distance (let’s say you are using a digital photograph of your favorite cat to create a photo mosaic) you would only see the cat. However, you might notice that the photograph’s resolution is a little off, or that something seems to be different about this photograph. When you stand close to the photo mosaic you will notice that there are many different photographs infused within the photo itself. How interesting!

You can use many kind of photos for the mosaic part of the digital photograph you want to. For example, in your favorite cat’s photo mosaic you could use many different photos of your cat to make up your photo mosaic of your cat. So, when you see it from a distance, you will see a large photo of your favorite cat. However, when you look closer you will see many different photos of your cat doing other things in the equal rectangular sections!

Who Invented the Art of Photo Mosaics?

There is no real known inventor, but one man that is believed to be the inventor of photo mosaics. His name is Joseph Francis, and he created a photo mosaic in 1993 while working for R/Greenberg Associates in Manhattan. He made a poster known as the ‘Live From Bell Labs’ created a lot of talk. He created the photo mosaic from a photo of a face. However, his photo mosaic was inspired by an artist by the name of Chuck Close.

How Can You Make Your Own Photo Mosaic?

You can create your own photo mosaics to decorate your home, give as gifts and more. You will need some certain supplies to make a photo mosaic.

Supplies -

A digital camera
Appropriate software
Good color printer
Your one photograph
The other photos you will be using as the smaller images.

There are quite a few different kinds of software that have been created to help you create your own digital photo mosaic.

Here are some software to choose from -

For Windows:

AndreaMosaic

Imosaic

PhotoMosaic

PicToBrick

For Mac:

MacOsaix

PicToBrick

For Online:

Mosaicr

Mosaickr

There is a lot of software to choose from when looking for something to help you create a photo mosaic. However, if you know that you are going to be creating a lot of photo mosaics, you might want to have a company take care of all of it for you. They should be able to print and mail it for you, as well.

Decorate your home and wow your guests! Give one as a gift and be remembered. Your own digital photo mosaics will probably be very personal to you, and you will be able to enjoy them for a long time. If you are going to give one as a gift, it will also likely be personal and dear to the person you are giving it to. Photo mosaics can be a way to easily decorate your home that will add a personal touch to your walls. It will definitely be quite the conversation piece when you have guests, friends or family over to visit.

Digital photography and cameras have become increasingly popular over the last couple of years. Once only used by extreme hobbyists or the most cutting-edge photographers, the digital camera has now taken its place among one of the most coveted consumer items on the market. Digital photography has gone up against the standard film cameras in the marketplace and originally met with consumer resistance, now has become the king of the mountain in photography. Digitals only competition for the consumers hearts is the ubiquitous mobile phones equipped with still or video cameras.

Interestingly enough, if you been at any mass events like concerts, rallies, speeches, or sports events you will be certain to notice the thousands of people using their mobile phone to take images. It is truly impressive how the digital camera has taken a foothold in everyday life.

So how can we say that? Well one just has to look at the facts from the industry itself. The number one digital camera seller for over a year and a half now in the USA has been Kodak. Yes that is right, Kodak, the giant film photography company, has transformed itself in response to the digital wave that came out of nowhere.

Kodak was slow to respond to the demand of digital cameras, but they soon began producing digital cameras that the consumer showed a demand for. Now granted Kodak is still a huge player in the film business, which by the way is still flourishing, but they have done a marvelous job of creating a consumer product line in the digital camera arena. These products are super user friendly and they take great images to boot. The Kodak EasyShare cameras are number one in the USA and number three world wide behind Sony and Canon. Not bad for an old generation industrial giant. They have taken advantage of the digital age.

Digital camera technology is easier than ever for consumers to use, hence the reason behind the terrific worldwide growth. The cameras come ready to take great images, allow novice users to snap photos quickly and easily, and most of them have made it super easy to share, print or email photos to friends and family. Many cameras feature one button to push in order to share or print an image.

You can spend from $100 all the up to $3200+ for a top of the line digital SLR camera. Some of the best current models on the market include the new Canon E5D SLR at the high end of the cost scale at around $3200, the ultra slim Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T5 which is compact and makes a fashion statement to boot, the super easy to use and share images Kodak Easy Share One, and for great price to quality you can’t beat the Fuji FinePix F10 at around $350.

Like the computer industry, the rapid pace of technology changes has affected digital cameras as well. Industry specialists now estimate that digital cameras have a life cycle of about a year. That means that new product is constantly coming onto the scene to replace the old technology and consumers are supporting that by buying newer and fancier cameras as they are released each year.

Now of course there have to be new services that benefit from the digital camera wave. The local corner film shop may have disappeared but the printer companies have found a new heaven in the market. Color printers, the ink to fill them, paper, and image printings service both offline and online are proliferating in the digital age. One of the big online digital printers was bought up by Kodak themselves in order to help garner a share of online digital image printing business.
